Mary Star of the Sea Parish was established in 1889. The present church located on West 7th Street in San Pedro, California, built in 1958, is the third edifice to serve the parishioners of this parish. An elementary school opened in 1914, under the direction of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. In September, 1951, Mary Star of the Sea High School started the academic year with classes conducted in the elementary school. Mary Star of the Sea serves about 5,000 registered families in the cities of San Pedro and Rancho Palos Verdes. The ethnic composition of the congregation has evolved since the foundation date. At this date, parishioners declare several countries as places of family origins: Italy, Croatia, Mexico, Central and Latin America, the Philippines as well as other countries in the Pacific Rim.
