This Feast Day has a special meaning for the Velike Gospe name, "Drustvo Velike Gospe," suggested by the first chaplain, Rev. Stanislay Jurenko, referring to our Blessed Mother's Assumption into Heaven.
The Velike Gospe Society was formed at Mary Star in 1932. Mrs. Zorka Nizetich, the first president, gathered a group of 40 women members who wanted a social meeting place to discuss how religious and chairtable works helping the church could be furthered. Many projects and social events have been inaugurated by the society.
In 1946, a second society, the "Velike Gospe Jr. Society" was formed by Gerogia Plancich. These two groups functioned sperately and jointly on many church projects until 1967 when the two emerged. Their legancy remains with the "Our Lady of the Rosary" statue located on 8th street. This statue was paid for with the generosity of both gorups. Velike Gopse Society started the clothing center now operated by Mary Star Christian Care.
Today, society members participate in many church related porjects, such as assisitng with Altar maintenance, including linens & flowers, holding fundraisers to support these projects. During the Annual Fiesta, they prepare & serve the Sunday Auditorium Dinner and staff a raffle booth.
All societies are invited to participate in the procession starting at 11:30 am at the CHurch entrance on 7th street.
